A Permanent, High-Strength Replacement for Aging OEM S65 Plastic VANOS Covers
Introducing the latest solution from NRW Design: the S65 4130 Chromoly Bolt-Through VANOS Covers, engineered specifically for the BMW E9x M3 and its high-revving S65 V8.
For years, S65 owners have asked NRW Design to develop a solution for the aging and deteriorating factory plastic VANOS covers. With several aftermarket replacement options already available, we initially felt there were sufficient solutions on the market.
Over time, however, we observed failures associated with both aging OEM plastic covers and aftermarket clip-in style designs. After seeing the potential consequences firsthand, we decided to approach the problem differently.
The result is the NRW Design 4130 Chromoly Bolt-Through VANOS Cover.
Why Replace the Factory S65 VANOS Covers?
As the E9x M3 platform continues to age, deterioration of the factory plastic VANOS covers has become an increasingly important maintenance consideration.
NRW Design recently encountered a customer vehicle where an OEM plastic VANOS cover experienced a complete failure. The resulting component failure allowed the VANOS spring to damage the valve cover and contributed to extensive engine damage.
That experience reinforced our decision to develop a replacement designed around material strength and positive mechanical retention rather than another clip-in solution.
Billet 4130 Chromoly Steel Construction
The latest version of our S65 VANOS covers is precision machined from billet 4130 chromoly steel.
4130 chromoly was selected for its excellent strength characteristics, allowing us to produce a compact, lightweight component capable of handling the demands of the S65 VANOS system.
Each cover features a single-piece design with no separate clip-in retention mechanism.
Bolt-Through Design
Rather than relying on a clip-in installation, the NRW Design VANOS covers utilize a bolt-through retention design using the OEM cam bolts.
This provides positive mechanical retention while eliminating reliance on an aging plastic cover or aftermarket clip-style design.
Installation follows the applicable BMW procedure for the camshaft/VANOS fasteners, including all required factory procedures and specifications.
Designed with Rotational Mass in Mind
Material selection and weight were important considerations throughout development.
Despite being manufactured from high-strength 4130 chromoly steel, NRW Design engineered these components to minimize unnecessary mass. The result is an exceptionally lightweight bolt-through VANOS cover designed to add as little additional rotating mass as practical.

VANOS Cover Installation & Tool Rental Program
Proper installation of bolt-through VANOS covers requires the correct tools, procedures, and mechanical knowledge.
To make installation more accessible, NRW Design offers a VANOS Tool Rental Program when purchasing our S65 Bolt-Through VANOS Covers.
How the Tool Rental Program Works
When ordering your VANOS covers, select the VANOS Covers + Tool Rental option.
Your order will ship with the required NRW Design rental tool set. If all rental tool sets are currently in use, your VANOS covers will be held until a tool set has been returned, inspected, and becomes available.
The tool kit will be inspected for completeness before leaving NRW Design. Upon receiving the kit, you are responsible for immediately notifying NRW Design if any components are missing or damaged.
7-Day Rental Period
The tool rental period is 7 calendar days from the date the package is delivered to you. Weekends and holidays are included in the seven-day rental period.
The installation itself typically requires approximately 3–5 hours, although actual installation time will vary depending on experience, vehicle condition, and available equipment.
The tool kit must be shipped back within the applicable rental period.
Tool Rental Pricing
Tool Rental: $99 USD
Rental Period: 7 calendar days
Refundable Tool Deposit: $200 USD
Return shipping is the responsibility of the customer.
Tool Return Requirements
All rental tools must be returned to NRW Design using UPS or FedEx with valid tracking information.
Customers must provide NRW Design with the return tracking information by email.
We strongly recommend purchasing adequate shipping insurance. The customer is responsible for ensuring the complete tool kit is safely returned to NRW Design.
Once the tool kit is delivered to NRW Design, we will inspect all tools and components for damage or missing items.
If everything is returned in the same condition and configuration in which it was supplied, the $200 deposit will be refunded to the original method of payment.
Please allow up to approximately one week for inspection and payment processing.
Missing, damaged, or unreturned tools may result in partial or complete forfeiture of the tool deposit, as applicable to the replacement or repair required.
Installation Support
NRW Design does not provide individual technical assistance for installation of the VANOS covers.

We strongly recommend reviewing the complete installation procedure before beginning the job or selecting the tool-rental option.
Installation should only be performed by someone with the appropriate mechanical experience, tools, and understanding of the BMW S65 VANOS and camshaft system. All applicable BMW installation procedures and torque specifications should be followed.
Tool Rental Eligibility
The NRW Design VANOS Tool Rental Program is currently available only to customers within the contiguous 48 United States.
Tool rental is not currently available for Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. territories, or international orders.
